Helped by a clinical fourth inning, the Ventura County Pirates defeated the Ventura County Buccaneers 14-5 at Pote Field in Griffith Park Friday in the first game of the summer season for each team.
The game was a non-league matchup between the two teams which comprise the Ventura County Pirates baseball organization.
Pitcher Sebastian Zepeda entered in the third inning and earned the win for the Pirates. The Bucs’ Trevor Grey absorbed the loss.
Leadoff hitter Kyle Soberano did his job putting men on the bases for the Pirates with doubles in the third and fourth innings. He scored in both frames and stole third base in the fourth. Center fielder Kaleyl Anderson, who followed Soberano in the order, was 2-3 with two walks and two stolen bases.
The top of the order production made for an efficient Pirates’ offense, particularly in the fourth inning. The Pirates brought 12 men to the plate, scored seven runs, and hit three doubles in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
The Pirates face their first road test 1 p.m. Saturday against the OC Legends at Brookhurst Park in Anaheim.
