Pirates’ leadoff hitter and second baseman Kyle Soberano is the Sunset Baseball League player of the week for the period beginning Sunday, June 16. The designation is essentially a formality considering Soberano’s performance the past several days.
Soberano was 14-21 at the plate last week and earned multiple hits in all five games he played. He extended the multi-hit streak to six games during the first game he played this week. All of those games came on the road.
The infielder’s .549 average enables the Pirates’ classically efficient lineup construction. General Manager George Vranau queues power bats behind Soberano which challenges opposing teams to pitch out of high-leverage situations multiple times in any given game. Opponents were unsuccessful last week, as the pirates went 6-1 on their road trip and were undefeated in league play over that span.
Soberano leads the team in hits, singles, stolen bases, batting average, and on base percentage. He has an active seven-game hit streak. Soberano is already making a strong case for a second consecutive player of the week designation as he is 4-7 since Sunday.
The Pirates face the SoCal Sparrows 5 p.m. Thursday in Irvine. They have not played consecutive home games since a June 15 doubleheader and will not do so again until a doubleheader on July 6.
