The Ventura County Pirates Organization is excited to announce the addition of a third team for the 2021 summer season.
Former NCAA Division 1 champion and Angels draft pick Spiro Psaltis has been hired to coach the club.
“To get back into baseball is something I’ve been looking forward to for a long while,” Psaltis said. “To get back on the field and to pass on the skills to young players, something that I’ve been really looking forward to, I think the time now is right.”
Psaltis has over a decade of coaching experience and served as head baseball coach at Glendale High School from 1987-1996.
The new team will be called the Ventura County Bucs and will play in the Golden Coast Collegiate League (GCCL). The Ventura County Baseball Organization last participated in the GCCL in 2019, when the VC Bucs finished third in the standings (15-15) .
According to Ventura County Pirates General Manager George Vranau, the addition of the GCCL Bucs to the Pirates organization is designed to provide “Players with an opportunity to play at a competitive collegiate level by creating additional roster spots for those players displaced due to COVID-related spring season cancellations.”
The GCCL Bucs will join the VC Pirates and the SBL Bucs as part of the three-team organization. The VC Pirates will play in the newly-formed Best of the West division of the Sunset Baseball League (SBL) and are the defending SBL champions. The SBL Bucs will play in the SBL regular division.
