The Ventura County Pirates displayed remarkable resilience as they overcame a late deficit to defeat the Biscuits 5-4.
The Ventura County Pirates clashed with the Biscuits in an intense matchup on Wednesday, June 14th at Los Angeles Valley College. With a 6-1 record coming into the game, the Pirates were determined to continue their winning streak after a resounding victory over the SoCal Sliders.
In a tightly contested game, the final score stood at 5-4, with the Pirates winning. The Pirates took an early 3-0 lead, but the Biscuits mounted a comeback in the 6th inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-3 advantage. However, the Pirates refused to back down and rallied in the 8th inning. This spark was fueled by Jackson Benattar's crucial triple that drove in the game-tying run. Andrew Tovar followed that stellar hit with a sacrifice fly, sending in Benattar to score the game-winning run.
Several Pirates players delivered standout performances. Jackson Benattar showcased his hitting prowess with a single, clutch triple, and two total runs. Jovan Camacho contributed to the win with two singles and two runs as well. Another player who was crucial for the Pirates at bat was Andrew Tovar, who despite having only one hit, made a significant impact on the game with a game-high three RBIs. These players played significant roles in the Pirates' offensive surge.
The Pirates' pitching staff also played a vital role in the victory. Michael Ryhlick started on the mound and pitched three solid innings, allowing only two hits and no runs. Jackson Hisey, who earned the win, followed with three scoreless innings, displaying excellent control and contributing to the team's success.
Throughout the game, the Pirates showcased their offensive firepower, tallying 10 hits and scoring five runs. Their cohesive defensive efforts limited the Biscuits to four runs on 10 hits. The Pirates also demonstrated their base-running excellency, stealing six bases to add pressure on the Biscuits' defense and put runners in scoring positions.
Reflecting on his impressive performance, Jackson Benattar shared his insights, saying, "I saw the gap split and I trailed the runner in front of me. He took off, and I trailed him, and I got 3 out of it. My pitch selection, I try to work my way into hitters' counts, and when I get into those counts, I take advantage of it. I'm not trying to do too much; I'm going to stay within myself and be the player I know I am."
With this resounding victory, the Ventura County Pirates improved their season record to 7-1 and extended their winning streak to three games. Their consistent performance and never-say-die attitude highlight their potential for a successful season.
Looking ahead, the Pirates are set to face the Philippines team at Pierce College on Thursday, June 15th at 4 pm.
